Spain's olive oil market

AICA published its September data on 15 October, closing the 2025/26 balance. Stocks at 30 September were 356,914 tonnes, of which 175,745 tonnes were at olive mills, 178,291 tonnes at bottlers, operators and refiners and 2,878 tonnes in the Patrimonio Comunal Olivarero. Production for 2025/26 reached 1,305,828 tonnes, including 3,406 tonnes milled in September, and exits from the market in September came to 123,486 tonnes, excluding imports. These stocks are the opening stocks for 2026/27, for which the agriculture ministry made a first national estimate of 1,602,596 tonnes on 1 October.

The cooperative federation Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias gives a wider September figure of 137,604 tonnes, as reported by Agrodigital. It includes about 15,000 tonnes of imports that the federation estimated itself while customs data are pending, and splits the total into about 92,870 tonnes of exports and 44,730 tonnes for the domestic market. These are the federation's estimates, not AICA figures.

On 20 October ASAJA, COAG, UPA and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias asked minister Luis Planas to activate the withdrawal mechanism of the marketing standard immediately. They put availability for 2026/27 "above 2,175,000 tonnes", which is their own estimate. The standard can be triggered when opening stocks plus production reach 120% of the average of the previous six campaigns. Francisco Elvira of COAG Jaén puts the volume to withdraw at 188,700 tonnes, or 11.78% of each mill's output, based on production of 1,602,000 tonnes, carryover of 357,000 tonnes and imports of 218,000 tonnes.

Planas told Oleum Xauen that the decision would come in the first half of November, and the bottlers' and exporters' associations ANIERAC and ASOLIVA oppose the measure, citing a report by the competition authority CNMC on the risks of restricting supply.

The Junta de Andalucía's price observatory put extra virgin at mill level at €3.17/kg for 12 to 18 October, virgin at €3.04/kg and lampante, the lowest grade of virgin oil, at €2.97/kg. Extra virgin was €3.18/kg a week earlier and €3.53/kg for 28 September to 4 October.

Poolred data for 10 to 16 October, compiled by COAG Jaén, put extra virgin at €3.14/kg, virgin at €3.01/kg and lampante at €2.93/kg, and COAG notes that very few trades are taking place. ASAJA-Jaén's Poolred report, published on the morning of 19 October, gives €3.16/kg, €2.99/kg and €2.88/kg for the three grades, with 50 trades totalling 3,185 tonnes. The three series cover different days, so they are close but not directly comparable.

Picking crews have started on green olives for early-harvest oil in several districts of Jaén, and mills in the Sierra de Cazorla designation of origin have been making their first oils for more than a week, according to Jaén24h. The sector hopes for another record year for early oil, though no production figures are available yet.

ASAJA, COAG and Unión de Uniones have called a tractor protest in Madrid on Wednesday 28 October, ending at the agriculture ministry, over costs, imports and the CAP budget. UPA is not taking part. On the shelf, the consumer association FACUA's price comparison, as reported by Qué!, had Mercadona's own-label extra virgin at €4.35 per litre on 19 October.

Binding offers for Deoleo are due on 26 October, according to unnamed sources cited by Expansión and reported by Distribución Actualidad. Dcoop's president Antonio Luque said on 15 September that the deadline of Dcoop's own offer had already passed. No new information on the sale was published between 14 and 20 October.

Greece's olive oil market

Of the 6 tankers of new-crop extra virgin that the Agioi Apostoloi cooperative in Laconia offered at €4.60/kg, only 3 were traded, the Olivenews price observatory reports, which completes the picture of last week's sales at €4.60/kg by two Laconian cooperatives. The cooperative also reports very low oil yields this year, from 6% to 11%, against about 18 kg of oil per 100 kg of olives last season, and Olivenews puts the industrial ratio of fruit to oil at around 6:1.

In Crete, Christos Lydis, a spokesman for Heraklion olive growers, says producers are selling at about €3.5 to €4/kg, without giving the grade or the season of the oil. In Messinia, Giorgos Katsoulis, president of the regional cooperative union, estimates this year's output at 40% to 50% above last year's, without a tonnage.

For last season's oil, Olivenews gives indicative ex-factory prices for extra virgin of €3.35/kg in Greece, €4.20/kg in Italy, €3.20/kg in Spain and €3.25/kg in Tunisia.

Current quotations (Greece):

  • New-crop EVOO, two Laconian cooperatives: €4.60/kg
  • Old-crop EVOO, Olivenews observatory: €3.35/kg
  • EVOO, Oleista, week 42: €3.59/kg

Italy's olive oil market

Olive growers in Puglia protested over falling prices, duty-free Tunisian imports and origin controls, with the Orgoglio Olivicolo association outside the Bari prefecture and Coldiretti holding a large demonstration in Bari in the same week. Il Post, citing the market institute ISMEA, put the price in Bari at about €4.3/kg in October, against about €9 in 2025. Regione Puglia made €30 million available to farms to reduce production costs.

The agriculture ministry announced its inspectorate's third operation against fake extra virgin, with 4,380 litres seized and 120,000 false bottles blocked. The ministry gave no location or details of the fraud. Neither ISMEA nor the sector bodies have published a national production estimate for 2026/27, and the ICQRF stock report for 31 October usually appears in the first half of November.

Current quotations (Oleista, week 42):

  • EVOO: €4.75/kg
  • VOO: €3.00/kg
  • Lampante: €2.71/kg

The latest SIMA olive oil bulletin we could open covers 7 to 13 September, so no new official price is available for October. The ministry's bulletins run several weeks behind.

Tunisia's olive oil market

The Ministry of Agriculture reported outbreaks of olive knot, a disease caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas savastanoi, in Melloulech, in the governorate of Mahdia, according to Webdo. Its emergency plan includes confining infected zones, pruning, burning residues on site and preventive treatment of all olive trees in the area. No figure has been given for the area affected, and no link to the expected fall in production has been established.

Najah Saïdi Hamed, president of the national olive producers' chamber, expects 2026/27 oil output of about 300,000 tonnes, against about 500,000 tonnes in 2025/26, a fall of 40%. She first gave this estimate in September, and there is still no official national forecast. Harvest openings are set region by region, with Kairouan starting on 26 October, according to Tuniscope, while the regional agriculture office in Sousse proposed 6 November for its opening.

Turkey's olive oil market

Agronomist and consultant Murat Küçükçakır says Turkey could produce 380,000 to 400,000 tonnes of olive oil in 2026/27, a single analyst's forecast relayed by Jus d'olive. The olive council UZZK has not yet published its 2026/27 estimate, which usually comes in late October.

Olive oil tariffs in China and the United States

Under an understanding reached in Beijing on 9 October, China will cut its tariffs on some EU products, olive oil among them, from 1 January 2027 for four years, according to Agence Europe. The package covers about €4 billion of EU exports and saves at least €225 million in duties, as reported from the European Commission. The new rates for olive oil have not been published.

In the United States, we found no exemption for olive oil headings in the part of the Section 301 annex we could read. That text was cut off, so it is not yet confirmed whether olive oil is exempt.

Market outlook

Spain closed 2025/26 with 356,914 tonnes of olive oil in stock, after production of 1,305,828 tonnes, and enters a campaign for which the ministry expects 1,602,596 tonnes. Extra virgin at Andalusian mills fell from €3.53/kg in the week to 4 October to €3.17/kg for 12 to 18 October, while new-crop extra virgin from Laconia sold at €4.60/kg. The closing stocks and the withdrawal decision matter most to Spanish mills and cooperatives deciding when to sell old and new oil, and to buyers planning purchases for the first months of 2026/27.

The next figures to watch are the binding offers for Deoleo on 26 October, the UZZK estimate for Turkey, the tractor protest in Madrid on 28 October, the Spanish government's decision on withdrawal in the first half of November and AICA's October data, the first month of 2026/27, in mid-November.

Correction to the week 41 digest

Our article of 8 October said that the Junta de Andalucía's price observatory gave €3.43/kg for 28 September to 4 October. The observatory's own page shows extra virgin at €3.53/kg for that week, and the €3.43/kg figure came from the agriculture ministry's market bulletin for the same days.
