Italy bought 61.6% of the extra virgin olive oil that Greece exported between January 2022 and August 2026, paying an average of €5.29 per kg, 25.2% less than all other buyers combined, according to a Wikifarmer analysis of Eurostat export data. Italy's discount has widened every year since 2023, from 13.2% to 36.5% in the first eight months of 2026. Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom paid more than €7 per kg, and in 24 of the 27 markets where both countries sell at least 1,000 tonnes, oil shipped from Greece had a higher unit value than oil shipped from Spain.
Italy takes three fifths of Greece's extra virgin exports
From January 2022 to August 2026, Greece exported 621,916 tonnes of extra virgin olive oil at an average unit value of €5.98 per kg, and 383,228 tonnes of it went to Italy (Eurostat Comext). By value Italy's share is lower, at 54.5%, because it pays less per kilo. Over the same months Italy took 31.5% of Spain's extra virgin exports, so Greek exporters depend on a single buyer almost twice as much as Spanish exporters do.
These figures are export unit values, meaning the declared value of the shipments divided by their weight, for customs code 1509 20 00 (extra virgin olive oil), with Greece as the exporter. They are free on board prices at the Greek border, before freight. They cover oil shipped from Greece, which is usually but not provably Greek-grown. Each country is compared with all other buyers combined, weighted by the volume they bought.
Italy's discount has widened every year since 2023
Italy paid less than other buyers of Greek extra virgin in every year from 2022 to 2026. The gap was 16.4% in 2022 and 13.2% in 2023. In 2024, when export prices peaked, it rose to 28.9%, and it has kept growing since, to 34.5% in 2025 and 36.5% in January to August 2026.

In 2025 Italy bought 95,733 tonnes at €4.73 per kg while other buyers paid an average of €7.21. In 2024 the gap between Italy's €7.24 and the €10.18 paid by everyone else was almost €3 per kg.

Germany paid €7.35 per kg and the United States €7.01 per kg for extra virgin olive oil shipped from Greece
Germany and the United States pay more than €7 per kilo
Germany was the second largest buyer, with 59,132 tonnes at €7.35 per kg, 26.0% more than all other buyers combined. The United States followed with 41,241 tonnes at €7.01 per kg, 18.7% more. The United Kingdom paid €7.59 per kg on 13,004 tonnes and France €7.25 per kg on 10,158 tonnes, 27.8% and 21.8% above other buyers.

Spain bought 22,363 tonnes of extra virgin from Greece at €5.21 per kg, 85% of it in 2022 and 2023. Among destinations that took at least 50 tonnes, South Korea paid the highest unit value, €11.81 per kg on 1,829 tonnes, and the median across those 65 destinations was €7.27 per kg.
Oil shipped from Greece sells above Spanish oil in the same markets
Twenty-seven countries bought at least 1,000 tonnes of extra virgin from both Greece and Spain between January 2022 and August 2026. In 24 of them the oil from Greece had the higher unit value. Germany and France each paid 41.3% more per kilo for oil from Greece than for oil from Spain, the United Kingdom 29.5% more and the United States 14.0% more. The three exceptions were Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Serbia.
| Buyer | From Greece, €/kg | From Spain, €/kg | Difference |
| Germany | 7.35 | 5.20 | +41.3% |
| France | 7.25 | 5.13 | +41.3% |

Italy paid 8.9% more for oil from Greece than for oil from Spain, although Italy also buys Spanish extra virgin below what Spain's other customers pay. Leaving Italy out, the average unit value of extra virgin exports was €7.08 per kg from Greece and €5.70 per kg from Spain.
The customs code does not separate bulk from bottled oil
Customs code 1509 20 00 covers every container size, from road tankers to 250 ml bottles, and the trade data do not show which share of the shipments is bulk and which is bottled. Bulk oil sells for less per kilo, and moving olive oil in bulk also carries different costs and terms. Italy's low unit value fits purchases of bulk oil for bottling and blending, but these data alone cannot confirm it.
For the same reason, the higher unit value of oil from Greece in Germany, France or the United Kingdom does not by itself mean higher quality. It can reflect smaller packs, a larger share of PDO or organic oil, or branded products, none of which the customs code records.
Unit values show where Greek oil earns the most
For Greek bottlers and exporters, these unit values give a public reference for what each market paid, as long as comparisons are made between similar packaging. Because Italy takes so much of the volume, Greece's average export price largely follows what Italian buyers pay. The 2026/27 season opens with Greek farm-gate prices already near €4 a kilo. The latest months are provisional, and Eurostat revises them as it receives corrected declarations.
