What is Animal Husbandry - Livestock Farming?

Livestock farming, also known as animal husbandry, refers to the practice of breeding (improving and reproducing), raising, and managing (farm) animals for various purposes, typically for food production (meat, milk, etc.), fiber (such as wool), leather or labor. It involves the management of animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, and others in intensive or extensive systems to ensure their well-being and optimal productivity.

Key Aspects of Animal Husbandry:

  1. Breeding: Animal husbandry includes selective breeding to enhance desirable traits in livestock, such as higher milk yield in cows or faster growth rates in poultry. Modern techniques include artificial insemination and genetic engineering to improve the quality and productivity of the animals​.
  2. Feeding and Nutrition: Providing balanced nutrition is essential for the health and productivity of livestock. This involves understanding the dietary requirements of different animals and ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients through natural forage or supplemented feeds.

Examples of Livestock Farming Practices:

Sericulture, commonly known as silk farming, is the practice of cultivating silkworms (specifically the domesticated silkworm species Bombyx mori) to produce silk. It is an ancient industry that involves the entire process from raising silkworms to harvesting silk threads, which are then used in the production of textiles and other silk products.

Insect farming:

Insect farming refers to the practice of raising insects for various purposes, primarily for human consumption, but also for other applications such as animal feed, biotechnology, and waste management. This practice has gained attention in recent years due to its potential as a sustainable and efficient source of protein and other valuable resources.

Aquaculture - Fish farming

The farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, and algae. While similar in the management of living organisms, aquaculture is distinct from terrestrial animal husbandry in its aquatic environment and species-specific practices.

The animal welfare standards include:

  • Housing and Environment: Standards often specify requirements for housing facilities, such as adequate space, shelter, temperature control, ventilation, and cleanliness, to ensure animals have a comfortable and safe environment. Animals should have access to an open-air area for a great proportion of their life.
  • Nutrition and Water: Guidelines address the nutritional needs of animals, ensuring they receive appropriate diets that meet their physiological requirements. Access to clean water is also considered essential.
  • Healthcare: Standards include provisions for veterinary care, disease prevention, and management of injuries or illnesses to maintain animal health and minimize suffering.
  • Behavioral Needs: Guidelines often emphasize the importance of providing enrichment activities and social interactions that promote natural behaviors and mental stimulation. It is essential to allow animals to display their natural behavior and create living conditions resembling/copying their natural habitats. 
  • Handling and Transport: Standards outline protocols for handling animals to minimize stress and injury. They also address transportation practices to ensure animals are transported safely and with minimal discomfort. Animals should be handled calmly and gently during loading, transportation, and unloading. All personnel involved in taking care of the animals should possess the necessary basic knowledge and skills regarding the health and welfare needs of the animals.
  • Monitoring and Compliance: Monitoring mechanisms and compliance protocols are typically established to ensure that the standards are adhered to and that any deviations are identified and addressed promptly.
  • Minimize suffering during slaughter: Stunning methods are employed to render animals unconscious and insensible to pain before slaughter. Common stunning methods include captive bolt stunning (for cattle and sheep), electrical stunning (for poultry), and carbon dioxide stunning (for pigs and poultry). Restraints should prevent injury and allow for quick and effective stunning or killing.
