Growing Raspberries from Seeds: A Step-by-Step Guide
Raspberries can be grown by seed, but it is not recommended, especially for commercial productions. Some gardeners harvest the raspberry seeds from ripened raspberries, and others buy certified disease-free seeds from an accredited store. After harvesting the seeds from a ripe raspberry, they wash them very well to remove any pulp residue (that can decrease germination). Afterward, they place the seeds on paper or in a shallow box and let them dry in the sun. Once they are completely dried, they can be sowed in small pots, covered with a thin layer of soil, and watered. When the seedlings grow, the grower transfers them to larger pots. You may avoid placing them directly outside because they need to harden them off.

The optimum time to sow the seeds is in the winter because they need 4-5 weeks to germinate.
Raspberry seeds are tiny, so you can press them gently into the soil and cover them with a thin layer of potting soil and water. The trays can be placed near a window in a cool room and cover them with plastic or nylon to keep the soil moist. When the temperatures outside reach 60°F (15°C), they can be moved outside in partial shade. You are advised to water regularly, but not excessively, to keep the soil lightly moist. When the plants develop their first true leaves, transplant them into 4-6 inch (10-15 cm) pots with good potting soil that you mix with N-P-K fertilizers, compost or humus, and aged manure. Afterward, do not forget to water regularly. It is best to keep them in partial shade for a while, and gradually move them to a sunny area. This way, the plant hardens off faster. One-year-old raspberry plants grown from seed can be placed in a final location, just as you would treat plants purchased in nurseries.
