Types of berries-Superfoods

Superfoods is a term used to describe some foods that provide many health benefits and nutrients. They don't have their own food group, and the term is used primarily in marketing and not by dieticians. Berries are a category that can be considered superfoods because of their high nutritional value. Some of the most healthy berries are (in alphabetical order):

  • Açai berries, harvested from Açai Palm Tree
  • Acerola cherry-Malpighia emarginata, also known as Acerola, Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry, wild crepe myrtle
  • Aronia-black chokeberry is a genus of the chokeberries
  • Bilberries or European blueberries, the most common species is Vaccinium myrtillus L.
  • Blackberries are produced by numerous species in the genus Rubus
  • Blueberries are in the genus Vaccinium, but in the section Cyanococcus
  • Boysenberry is a cross among the European raspberry (Rubus idaeus), European blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), American dewberry (Rubus aboriginum), and loganberry (Rubus × loganobaccus) developed by an American farmer Walter Knott in the 1920s. He grew the berries at his farm, and his wife made the sweet fruit into jams and preserves. After that, Knott's Berry Farm became famous. Boysenberries need conditions similar to blackberries.
  • Camu Camu Berries grow mostly in the Amazon rainforest in Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. It is known for its medicinal properties.
  • Cranberries belong to the genus Vaccinium subgenus Oxycoccus 
  • Goji berries, Lycium or Chinese wolfberries
  • Golden berries (Physalis peruviana), also known as Peruvian groundcherry
  • Maqui Berries (Aristotelia chilensis), or Chilean wineberry
  • Mulberries
  • Noni berries- canary wood (Morinda citrifolia), also called Indian mulberry, cheese fruit, and wild pine
  • Sea Buckthorn Berries (Hippophae), also known as sandthorn, sallowthorn, or seaberry
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
