As the sector undergoes rapid innovation and policy reform, understanding its complexities and opportunities is crucial for building a resilient and sustainable future.

What Is the Agrifood System?

The agrifood system includes every stage of the food value chain, from farm inputs like seeds and fertilizers to agricultural production, processing, transportation, marketing, consumption, and waste management. It also covers supporting sectors such as logistics, research and development, and retail. Unlike traditional agriculture, which focuses mostly on primary production, the agrifood system integrates economic, social, and environmental dimensions, recognizing that food is not just a commodity but a fundamental human right and a key driver of development.

Why Agrifood Matters

Food Security and Nutrition

According to the United Nations, nearly 735 million people were chronically undernourished in 2023, with numbers exacerbated by conflicts, pandemics, and climate-related events. The agrifood sector is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2—Zero Hunger—by improving the availability, accessibility, and affordability of nutritious food. Beyond calories, agrifood systems also influence diet quality, and a resilient and diverse sector supports better nutrition by promoting fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other nutrient-dense crops.

Economic Development and Employment

Agrifood is a cornerstone of the global economy, employing over 1 billion people—more than one-quarter of the world’s labor force. In low- and middle-income countries, agriculture often accounts for a substantial share of GDP and employment, particularly for rural populations. Smallholder farmers, who produce roughly one-third of the world’s food, are especially central to food security. Empowering these farmers through improved access to technology, credit, and markets can unlock significant economic potential and reduce poverty.

Environmental Impact

Agriculture is both a contributor to and a victim of climate change. It accounts for about 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is a major driver of deforestation, water use, and biodiversity loss. However, agrifood systems also hold the key to climate solutions. Sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture, agroecology, and precision farming can reduce emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and restore degraded ecosystems.

Key Challenges Facing the Agrifood System

Technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), satellite imaging, and blockchain are revolutionizing food production and distribution. Precision agriculture enables efficient input use, real-time crop monitoring, and data-driven decision-making.

Alternative Proteins

Plant-based meats, cultured meat, and insect protein offer lower-impact options that could reduce dependence on traditional livestock and respond to environmental concerns and changing consumer preferences.

Urban and Vertical Farming

Urban agriculture and vertical farming enable year-round fresh food production using minimal land and water, reducing food miles and emissions.

Circular Food Economy

A circular approach minimizes waste and maximizes resource use through composting, bioenergy production, and nutrient recycling, creating new business opportunities and reducing environmental impact.

Policy and Governance in Agrifood

Public policy is critical in shaping agrifood systems. Governments and international organizations must foster innovation, investment, and sustainability through research, infrastructure, education, regulation, and fair trade policies. Global frameworks like the UN Food Systems Summit and the European Green Deal help guide national policies toward more equitable and sustainable agrifood systems.

The Role of Consumers

Consumers drive demand and influence food production through their choices. As awareness of health and sustainability grows, more people are seeking local, organic, fair trade, and plant-based products. Food literacy and consumer advocacy can pressure companies and governments to adopt better practices.
