Peppermint Plant Wiki
Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is a perennial herbaceous aromatic shrub, which belongs to the family of Lamiaceae (the family of rosemary and lavender). It is a sterile hybrid, a cross between watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). It cannot be grown from seeds collected from a parent plant. However, mainly for amateur cultivation, certified seeds obtained commercially (e.g. from an agriculture store) can be used. It is propagated, mainly by cuttings, rootstocks or rhizome stolons to ensure uniformity of cultivation and increased yield.. The plant grows during spring and summer and produces mint scented leaves that are rich in essential oil.
The essential oil of peppermint is used widely as flavor agent in soft drinks, ice creams, toothpastes, tobacco products etc. Peppermint essential oil is also widely used in the Pharmaceutical and Personal Health Care industries. Peppermint leaves are added as fresh in cocktails and various dishes. Peppermint tea has also become very popular during the last two decades, due to its digestive, antispasmodic and stress relieving properties.
The multiple uses and high value of peppermint oil has established peppermint as a global respected commodity. USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Japan, China and India are the world leading peppermint producers.
