Aloe vera, a plant revered for its medicinal properties, requires careful nutrient management to maximize its yield and maintain soil health. Aloe, particularly when cultivated for commercial and medicinal purposes, is highly responsive to both organic and inorganic fertilizers. 

It's important to note that every field is different, and the nutrient needs and fertilizer recommendations mentioned here are based on general studies and research. Soil conditions, climate, and specific crop management practices can vary widely, so it is crucial for farmers to conduct regular soil analysis and consult with an agronomist or agricultural expert to tailor a nutrient management plan to their specific conditions. 

Manure and Mulches

The cultivation of Aloe vera typically emphasizes organic farming practices, particularly in regions like India, where it is often grown as an organic crop. The primary organic fertilizers used are farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, poultry manure, and green manure. At the time of soil preparation, it is recommended to apply 10-15 tons of farmyard manure per hectare (approximately 8,900–13,400 lbs/ac) to establish a nutrient-rich growing environment. Similarly, annual supplements, including 2.5-5 tons of vermicompost per hectare (2230-4460 lbs/ac), further boost leaf yields and monetary returns. Additionally, the incorporation of cow dung (5-10 tons/ha or 4460 to 8920 lbs/ac) serves as a sustainable option for enriching the soil.

Wood ash can also be introduced during the planting stage, as it aids in the establishment and growth of young Aloe vera plants by providing essential minerals and improving soil structure.

Inorganic Fertilization for Aloe

While organic methods dominate Aloe cultivation, the use of inorganic fertilizers can be strategically implemented to address specific nutrient deficiencies and to accelerate plant growth.

Nitrogen (N)

Nitrogen is crucial for the growth of Aloe vera as it helps to increase the chlorophyll content of the leaves, enhancing photosynthesis and increasing carbohydrate production. This directly leads to a larger number and size of leaves, which are important for Aloe vera cultivation since the leaves are harvested for their gel.

  • Application rate: The recommended application of nitrogen is 150 kg per hectare (133 lbs/ac). This dosage has been shown to significantly increase both the number and size of leaves, resulting in higher overall yields.

Phosphorus (P)

Phosphorus plays a vital role in energy transfer and root development. Although less directly influential on leaf size than nitrogen, phosphorus is crucial for strengthening the root system, which supports the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and water more efficiently.

  • Application rate: In recommended combinations of fertilizers, phosphorus is applied at a rate of 120 kg per hectare (107 lbs/ac).

Potassium (K)

Potassium contributes to the regulation of water and nutrient movement within the plant, making it essential for the plant’s overall vigor and resilience to stress. It also improves the quality of the aloe gel produced in the leaves by promoting the synthesis of proteins and other compounds vital for plant health.

  • Application rate: Potassium is often applied at a rate of 75 kg per hectare (67 lbs/ac) in the fertilization schemes. 

Integrated NPK Fertilization Strategy

An effective strategy for maximizing Aloe vera yield involves the balanced application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, typically as part of a broader nutrient management plan. In some regions, such as Southeast Asia, a combination of 25% inorganic fertilizers (NPK) with 75% organic manure (such as poultry manure) is recommended for optimal results. This combination results in increased fresh leaf weight, gel yield, and improved post-harvest soil fertility. 

Moreover, studies show that combining both organic and inorganic fertilizers can ensure the availability of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and micronutrients like zinc and boron. These nutrients influence protein metabolism, nucleic acid synthesis, photosynthesis, and overall enzymatic activity, all of which are crucial for Aloe vera’s growth and biomass yield.

Additional Nutrient Enhancements

Aside from the traditional use of farmyard manure and chemical fertilizers, Aloe vera can benefit from modern agricultural enhancements like mycorrhizal inoculation. This process fosters a symbiotic relationship between the plant's roots and fungi, improving nutrient absorption, especially phosphorus, and promoting robust root development. Although results are variable, some studies have indicated that inoculation with species such as Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae enhances the concentration of valuable bioactive compounds like aloin and β-polysaccharides, contributing to the overall medicinal quality of the crop.

Recommendations for Aloe

Aloe vera cultivation benefits most from an integrated nutrient management approach. To maximize yield, maintain soil health, and ensure sustainable farming practices, the following scheme is popular:

  1. Pre-Planting: You should apply 10-15 tons of farmyard manure per hectare (approximately 8,900–13,400 lbs/ac), supplemented by 2.5-5 tons (2230-4460 lbs/ac) of vermicompost annually to maintain soil fertility and ensure high leaf yields.
  2. Inorganic Fertilization: It is considered a good practice to use nitrogen-rich fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate to promote leaf expansion and photosynthesis, applying 150 kg of nitrogen per hectare (133 lbs/ac).

  5. Foliar sprays: The timing and method of application also influence the results. For example, foliar sprays of nitrogen, along with bioactive compounds like benzyladenine (BA), can boost leaf production and improve overall plant health.

By employing these practices, Aloe vera cultivation can be both profitable and environmentally sustainable, supporting the growing demand for this medicinal plant while safeguarding soil health for future harvests.
