Deforestation is a human-made result of cutting down whole forests to use the land mostly for agriculture. Forest cutting has immediate consequences for biodiversity, aridity, habitat loss, soil health, and climate change.
Forest trees bioaccumulate the air's carbon dioxide, slowing down the greenhouse effect. Soil after a wildfire or deforestation is left exposed to wind and rain, causing soil erosion and desertification. Agriculture is the prime cause of deforestation, but also the wood industry, urbanization, and mining accelerate it.
