About

Bio-LUSH is an EU Horizon Europe research project dedicated to advancing the biobased economy by transforming underexploited European biomass into high-quality fibres and nanocellulose. With a €4.48 million budget co-funded by the European Commission, the project systematically evaluates feedstocks such as hemp hurd, nettle, seagrasses, and forest residues to create sustainable, value-added materials for sectors including packaging, textiles, automotive and beyond. Running from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2027, Bio-LUSH aims to develop innovative biomass-refining and nanoscale fibrillation processes, improve novel crops through traditional breeding, and establish a nanocellulose quality index to support future certification and standardization. Bio-LUSH will demonstrate several applications, including edible biobased packaging, antibacterial textiles, and 3D-printable bio(nano)composite filaments for impact-resistant automotive components. The consortium unites 12 partners from 8 countries, covering the full value chain and ensuring that the developed solutions are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
