In the face of climate change, the agricultural sector is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint. Livestock farming, in particular, is responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions and waste, especially from methane-producing cattle. Small to medium-sized farms, which often struggle to adopt sustainable practices due to limited resources, are critical players in this transition. The question is: can digital technologies provide a solution?

Recent advances in digital technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), user management systems, and decision-support algorithms—are being explored as innovative tools to improve feed management, enhance animal health, and ultimately lower livestock emissions. With access to real-time data and insights through smartphones or other devices, farmers can make informed decisions quickly and efficiently.

Moreover, collaboration among farmers is enhanced through digital platforms that facilitate data-sharing and collective problem-solving. By learning from each other’s experiences and accessing a shared pool of knowledge, small-scale farmers can adopt best practices more quickly and effectively. This community-oriented approach accelerates the spread of sustainable methods across farming communities.

Projects such as the EU funded Farmtopia Sustainable Innovation Pilot (SIP3) exemplifies how these technologies can be put into practice. By focusing on improving feed management and animal health while empowering small farmers through data-sharing and user-friendly management systems, SIP3 is making a way for a more sustainable future.

Farmtopia’s expected outcomes are ambitious - SIP3 expects to deliver: 

  • A reduction of methane emissions by at least 10% per litre of milk produced
  • A 10-15% improvement in technical performance per animal
  • A 10-15% boost in profitability through productivity gains.

With these outcomes, Farmtopia aims to scale up its impact, helping more small farms gain access to state-of-the-art technology and ensure that the benefits of digital agriculture reach all corners of Europe.
