Cash or profit crops are the crops farmers grow to sell the production in the market for profit.
Some typical examples are: cereals, oilseeds, coffee, cotton, cocoa, sugar cane, etc.
This term is used to distinguish the crops cultivated for profit (selling, exporting, etc.) from the crops mainly grown to cover a farmer’s food needs (subsistence agriculture) or for a hobby. Cash crops are more commonly found in developed countries with great fertile plains. Nowadays, most farmers cultivate cash crops intensively. However, there is a tendency to change the philosophy aiming for sustainable agriculture.
