Like animals, plants have an immune system that can recognize threats (like pathogens) and initiate an immune response to defend themselves.

Plant disease resistance is the ability of the plant to restrict the growth/development of a specific pathogen, decreasing or avoiding the damage.

Resistance occurs when plant structural or chemical traits prevent insects or pathogens from feeding on or infecting the plant (e.g., by decreasing the digestibility-palatability of plant tissues). This minimizes the amount of herbivore damage to the plant. In some cases, resistance is used as a synonym to immunity.
