Multi-cropping is the cultivation of two or more crops in succession on the same plot in the same growing season. Farmers apply this practice as their income is boosted by the second crop that will be cultivated. Usually, fields capable of multiple crops within the year are the irrigated areas.
A successful example of multi-cropping is the cultivation of early-maturity maize after harvesting a legume such as vetch. The cultivation of maize benefits from the nitrogen fixation of the vetch, while the producer benefits financially from these two crops. Another example of multi-cropping is growing leafy vegetables after summer vegetables.
