Fallowing is the process of leaving a plot of land uncultivated for one or more seasons as part of crop rotation. After years of monoculture, the soil recovers its moisture and fertility while its structure improves. In addition, by stopping cultivation, populations of enemies and pathogens are reduced. Farmers believe that during fallow they lose income. However, the following year, the field will be more fertile and will give a higher yield in production. In European Union countries, producers can enter subsidized programs to cover part of the lost income if they leave their land fallow.
