What are the raised beds in small-scale farming?

Raised beds are a gardening technique where the soil is raised off the ground and framed with some material. Those concerned can use wood, concrete, stone, and plastic. They can also choose recycled and reused materials to reduce the initial cost. Farmers can form a bed without a frame by tilling and ridging the existing soil into a hill.

This method is commonly used in decorative roofs, amateur gardens, and small-scale farms (urban and peri-urban agriculture). They are mainly used for the production of leafy and bulbous vegetables. Growers can use the soil they wish, avoiding possibly poor soil in the area. Adding topsoil, compost, sand, and peat is very common. Since the cultivators do not tread on the ground, the soil is not compacted, has a good structure, and remains fluffy. Due to the structure’s height, tasks like weeding and harvesting are carried out easier.
