Are walnut trees deciduous?

Yes, they are. Walnut leaves drop when the tree is in dormancy.

Are walnut trees self-pollinating?

All walnut varieties are self-fertile, meaning that the pollen can travel from the male parts to the female parts of the same tree and produce nuts. Thus, a single tree can theoretically produce nuts without needing other walnut trees around. However, in most cases, pollen that is transferred with the wind to the female parts of the same tree (stigma) is often lost, because the female flower is not receptive-mature, at that time. Consequently, the best way to ensure adequate pollination to achieve the highest possible fruit set and yield is to ensure cross-pollination by planting two or more varieties.

Why are walnut trees grafted?

Most fruit trees are grafted or budded when cultivated for profit. Professional growers plant a tree that is a combination of two different plant tissues, the rootstock, and the scion. The rootstock is the lower part of the tree and produces the root system. Selecting the most suitable rootstock is extremely important because the rootstock can protect the whole tree from various soil-borne diseases. The scion produces the upper part of the tree and, of course, determines the nut’s characteristics. Budded or grafted trees come into fruition sooner. Additionally, they produce higher yields and are more resistant to most commonly found diseases than natural (non-grafted) trees are. Finally, they ensure fruit uniformity.
