Oak has always had a special place in the hearts of Greeks.
It was considered by the ancient Greeks as the sacred tree of Zeus.
The word oak means phallus and symbolized the oak of Zeus, hence the name oak and oak.
I think that even today the Greeks love oak, although this sacred relationship that existed in antiquity no longer exists.
Among other things, Greek beekeepers have an additional reason to love oak as it can generously offer them a very significant income with oak honey.

As a scientist I am not easily impressed by "rumors" about miraculous foods. I shift everything through and try to find its scientific basis. I will mention for example the famous "coconut oil" that in recent years was launched as a miracle, to such an extent that many rushed to replace olive oil with it. Digging and searching, I found that coconut oil is finally a fashion imposed by the companies that produce and market it and there is no scientific evidence that it should be included in our daily diet.

Honey, however, is another matter. It is a miracle of nature literally. It is one of the most valuable, nutritious and healthy foods there is and the reasons are countless.

Today, however, we will focus on a specific property of honey, its antioxidant action.

Chrysoula Tanakaki, Assistant Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Beekeeping and Sericulture at the Department of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki presented the results of a major research of the Department.

The antioxidant action of honey
Honey has a strong antioxidant effect. In other words, it fights free radicals, which are responsible for the degeneration of cells that causes cancerous tumors.

The antioxidant activity of different honeys, however, is not the same. In fact, manuka honey has gained the reputation of the best honey in the world, something that apparently does not apply in the end.

Oak honey versus the rest
In the research conducted at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 48 samples of honey from all over Greece and from all the flowers were selected and examined. The research involved honey from oak, pine, fir, heather, chestnut, thyme, orange and the famous foreign manuka.

Each honey presented its own unique properties, however the discovery that was made was unique.

It was found that the honey with the greatest antioxidant activity is the dark oak honey. Followed by the spruce honey, the heather honey, the chestnut honey, the pine honey, the thyme honey and the orange honey.

So thyme honey and orange honey may have an amazing aroma and as such be preferred by many, but they do not show as much antioxidant activity as the above. Of course, this does not mean that they are not valuable!

Oak honey is more valuable than manuka honey
Also impressive was the fact that oak honey is a stronger antioxidant than manuka honey, which in recent years has flooded the world market advertised for its biological action. In fact, manuka honey has less antioxidant activity than most Greek honeys.

Conclusion; The marketing they used to promote manuka was really effective!

We therefore understand both the great nutritional value of Greek honey and the need to take the necessary steps for Greek honey to take its rightful place in the world market.
