As it happens in many fruit trees (citrus, apples, fruits, etc.), a peach tree grown from seed may not manage to germinate. Even if it does, it will probably not bear fruits during its entire lifetime for various reasons. But since you want to feel the joy of growing your own tree from seed, let’s get started.

The first thing you have to do is to remove one or more pits from mature peaches. You may consider directly planting them in the soil during autumn and waiting for spring to germinate. However, following this method, you have even fewer chances to see them sprout.

The alternative is to soak the pits in water for 1-2 hours. Then, you may carefully place them in a jar with moist soil or on a wet towel. Finally, directly place the jar in the refrigerator for two weeks to 1 month.

The right time to plant them is by the time they have developed roots. Plant them in small pots with a special soil mix (soil with river sand, compost, etc.). Plant the seeds superficially, at a depth of 1.2 inches (3 cm), and cover lightly with soil. Then, place the pots at room temperature, close to a wide window so that the seedlings can access sunlight.

The most important thing from now on is to keep the pots moist but not soggy. You should not be surprised if none of your pits germinates. Whether the pit germinates depends on its variety. When the seedlings have managed to germinate and have reached a height of 6 inches (15 cm), you can transplant them into a bigger container.
