A food chain is a representation of the transfer of energy and nutrients in an ecosystem. Each organism is consuming the previous one and being consumed by the next. It shows the feeding relationships among different species, with each organism playing a specific producer, consumer, or decomposer role. In a typical food chain, plants (producers) are eaten by herbivores (primary consumers), which are consumed by carnivores (secondary consumers), and this chain continues until decomposers break down the remains of organisms.
