El Niño's Impact on Smallholder Farming

Are You and Your Farmers Prepared for El Niño’s Impact on Smallholder Farming in a Changing Climate?

With El Niño’s presence now confirmed, our focus shifts to strategies for mitigating its effects. There is a greater than 90% probability that El Niño will persist throughout the year, and forecasts indicate the likelihood of a moderate to intense El Niño event extending into 2024. This heightened El Niño activity is expected to lead to extreme weather events, including droughts, floods, and storms. This situation poses significant food security risks, particularly given the current global hunger crisis and inadequate funding for food aid efforts. We urge you to mark your calendar and join us for a special session organized by the EiA’s Global Agronomy Village in collaboration with CGIAR centers and partners. Together, we will explore ways to help small-scale farmers adapt to these challenging conditions and build resilience in the face of climate change. Our Sustainable and Resilient Food Production Systems expert within the CGIAR, Dr Tafadzwanashe Mabhaudhi, will lead the session.

The EiA Global Agronomy Village, in collaboration with CGIAR centers and partners, will host a webinar on El Niño’s impact on smallholder farming in a changing climate.

The overall purpose of the Webinar is to explore:

  • Strategies for mitigating effects of El Nino.
  • Ways to help small holder farmers adapt to these challenging conditions and build resilience in the face of climate change.
  • Existing alliances and platforms to disseminate critical information on El Niño to smallholder farmers across Southern Africa
