During the first two years, the lavender production will be relatively low (and in some cases almost zero) compared to the production of the following years. Hence, we must be patient and always find ways to optimize and locally adjust our cultivation methods. A normal yield production (in dried floral stems) for an experienced farmer in the first year is 550 lbs. (250 kg) per hectare, in the second year is 2200 lbs. (1000 kg) per hectare, in the third year 2600 lbs. (1180 kg) per hectare and in the fourth year 3000 lbs. (1400 kg) per hectare. Keep in mind that 1 hectare = 2,47 acres = 10.000 square meters and 1 ton = 1000 kg = 2205 lbs.
The average essential oil yield is close to 1,2 % of dried floral stems. Consequently, you can expect an average yield of 30 lbs. (14 kg) of essential oil per hectare, or 12 lbs. (5,6 kg) per acre. This yield is annual and presupposes healthy and mature lavender plants managed by experienced growers. Keep in mind that these figures refer to true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). There are some lavender hybrids (lavandita) that can yield 220 lbs. (100 kg) of essential oil per hectare, or ever more. However, the essential oil from these hybrids is normally of lower quality and can be marketed at a much lower price, compared to essential oil distilled from true lavender. Cheap essential oil from lavandita is often mixed with high quality essential oil from Lavandula angustifolia, as a way to reduce costs.
