Yuting Han
PhD student in Chemical Engineering
Yuting Han is a PhD student in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Dr. Helen Onyeaka and Dr. Taghi Miri. She has been researching the use of food waste to make biodegradable and antimicrobial-performing food packaging to improve food safety and reduce the environmental impact of conventional plastics.Since starting her PhD in September 2023, Yuting has been working towards a circular economy by converting underutilized food waste into biodegradable materials after a series of processes. She is also researching the incorporation of bacteriocins into biodegradable food packaging materials to extend the shelf life of food. In addition, the mechanical properties, biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity and other properties of the packaging are tested, and the formulation of the film is constantly updated based on the test results. Through meticulous research, Yuting is committed to using food waste to create biodegradable food packaging with better application properties.
