Peppermint Planting Distances and Number of Plants per Acre

Peppermint is a sterile hybrid and cannot be grown from seeds collected from a parent plant. However, mainly for amateur cultivation, certified seeds obtained commercially (e.g. agriculture store) can be used. Propagation occurs, mainly by cuttings, rootstocks or rhizome stolons to ensure uniformity of cultivation and increased yield. We generally get rhizomes, cuttings or rootstocks from older plantations (1 hectare of established plantation can yield enough material for 5-7 hectares). We normally need 3300 – 4400 lbs. (1500-2000 kg) of rhizomes for 1 hectare (10.000 square meters) of new peppermint cultivation.

In every hectare (1 hectare = 2,47 acres = 10.000 square meters), on average we have about 70.000 – 90.000 plants. We normally plant in rows that will have an average distance of 1,5-1,7 feet (45-55 cm) or slightly more. The distances between the plants inside the row range from to 8-12 inches (20-30 cm). Planting is done during spring via machines or by hand.
