Q&As Potato

Q&As Potato

When to plant potatoes?

At least two weeks from the last frost (February- April depending on the region) and during the summer (start of August).

How deep do you plant potatoes?

4-6 inches (10-15cm) deep, but then we have to “earth up” our crops.

What is the recommended potato seeding rate?

The recommended potato seeding rate is 2 to 2,5 tons per hectare for tuber size 45-60mm. For tuber sizes 28-35 mm, the recommended potato seeding rate is 1,5 to 1,8 tons per hectare. (1 hectare = 10.000m2)

On average, how many potato plants shall we space in a hectare (=10.000m2)?

From 25.000 to 60.000 plants per hectare. Of course, you can space as many as you want, but you do not make optimum use of your farm if you space fewer than 15.000 plants per hectare.

Shall we plant potatoes putting the eyes up or down?

It doesn’t matter. Generally new plants sprout from the eyes, so it would make sense for the eye to face upwards. However, planting the potato seed cutting with the eye upwards or downwards has not been found to affect production yield.

How long does it take to grow potatoes?

The very early potato varieties can be harvested 2,5 months from planting. But for the majority of potatoes, it takes on average 4 months (13-18 weeks) from planting till harvest.

Can I prune potato plants?

Potato plants do not need pruning.

How many potatoes can we harvest from a single potato plant?

From 3 to 25.

What is the average potato yield per hectare?

During your first year of cultivating potatoes, a good yield would be 25 tons per hectare. Experienced farmers after years of practice can achieve yields from 40 to 70 tons per hectare.
