Peppermint Planting Distances and Population

Peppermint Planting Distances and Population

Peppermint is a sterile hybrid and cannot be grown from seeds. It is propagated through cuttings, rootstocks or rhizomes. We generally get rhizomes, cuttings or rootstocks from older plantations (1 hectare of established plantation can yield enough material for 5-7 hectares). We normally need 3300 – 4400 lbs. (1500-2000 kg) of rhizomes for 1 hectare (10.000 m2) of new peppermint cultivation.

In every hectare (1 hectare = 2,47 acres = 10.000 m2), on average we have about 70.000 – 80.000 plants. We normally plant in rows that will have an average distance of 1,5-1,7 feet (45-55 cm) or slightly more. The distances between the plants inside the row range from to 8-12 inches (20-30 cm). Planting is done during spring via machines or by hand.
